Vienna in Song
April 26, 2008 | 12:00 AM
Baritone: Christopheren Nomura
Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3
Mahler: Songs of a Wayfarer
Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E
Tonight the orchestra celebrates Classical and Romantic masterworks born in Vienna. We open with Beethoven’s third, magnificently dramatic overture to his opera, Fidelio. With the powerful and eloquent voice of baritone Christopheren Nomura as our guide, we explore the world of the Viennese Art Song. Schubert was the founder, but Mahler was one of the greatest inheritors of the tradition, and his Wayfarer Songs belong among the finest of their kind. Our season comes to a triumphant conclusion with Brahms’ last and greatest symphony, a glorious celebration of the human spirit.
