Russian Fanfare & Celebration Music (Illinois Premiere) Elena Roussanova Lucas
Symphony #7 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131
Sergei Prokofiev
Concerto No. 2 for Piano in C minor, Op. 18
Sergei Rachmaninoff

Winston Churchill once said of Russia: "It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma: but perhaps there is a key..." To me that key is its music. We explore a century of Russian music in reverse. Rachmaninoff's masterpiece, from 1901, captures the Russian soul of the late 19th century: powerful, brooding, and a bit melancholy. Prokofiev's Symphony #7 (1952) picks up on this mood but leads us to brighter possibilities. Elena Roussanova Lucas' fanfare (2000) evokes the pride and warmth of a new Russia.
