Joseph Johnson
February 19, 2011 | 8:00 PM| Path of Echoes (Illinois Premiere) | Huang Ruo |
| Concerto for Cello in A minor, Op.129 | Robert Schumann |
| Symphony #3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97 | Robert Schumann |
Chinese composer Huang Ruo folds the music and language of his homeland
into a symphonic context. Experience a new sound world while thinking: "I have been here before." The mind and the muse are partners in the music of Robert Schumann. He wrote his life, inner struggles, and love for Clara into his music. From celebration to introspection, he will also bring you to undiscovered places that seem hauntingly familiar.
JOSEPH JOHNSON, CELLO SOLOIST
An exciting solo artist, Joseph Johnson has thrilled music lovers from Carnegie Hall to Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and at festivals around the world. He is currently in his debut season as the principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a post he most recently held with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He continues as principal cellist of the Santa Fe Opera, and, during the 2008-2009 season, served as guest principal cellist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.
“His playing is first about warmth and lyric beauty, and those qualities persisted in the memory after the music had stopped. Johnson’s playing is exquisite...” ~ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
