Back to the Future: Zwilich and Strauss explore music’s past. In a tribute to Handel, Zwilich’s Concerto Grosso also hints of Stravinsky’s own exploration of the Baroque. Spanning centuries, cultures, and conflicts, Strauss wrote his oboe concerto in 1945 and dedicated it to “an American Soldier” who happened to be the legendary oboist John DeLancie. Based on Molier’s play, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme takes us to the court of Louis XIV, whose support of LaSalle led to the establishment of Fort Crevecouer.
ALEX KLEIN, OBOE SOLOIST
Alex Klein made his debut as a soloist with orchestra at the age of ten, and is now simply regarded as one of the world’s finest oboe players. As the principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony, he received a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Instrumental Soloist with Orchestra. The winner of four international oboe competitions, he also won the International Competition for Musical Performers in Geneva, Switzerland in 1988 - the first oboist to do so in 29 years.
